I’ve been watching all the protests like everyone else and I have empathy for the marchers. Yet it is still a simple concept my parents taught me as a child that answers the question about illegal immigrants, people in this country without persmission. Rules are rules and even if you don’t agree with them you have to follow them, that’s the bottom line. I’m not so naive to think its this simple, there are many other issues rolled up into the challenge but this is the reality, illegal immigrants are breaking our laws. If you break the law you are considered a criminal.
We all come from immigrants, we are a country built by immigrants, I’m not against immigration. My grandparents immigrated from a European country in the early 1900’s legally — they learned the language, they assimilated into the United States and were Americans. We are a sovereign country who has a right to control our borders, the US does not have an open door policy, however, I’ve seen some activists, specifically Latino, who expect we should have open borders.
This issue has been all over the 24 hour news channel and one question that bothered me quite a bit was from Lou Dobbs of CNN when he asked, “have these demonstrations affected their opinion about immigration reform.” The question shouldn’t be what affect these demonstrations have on them, but what do their constituants in their districts think about these demonstrations. Most of these people don’t have voting rights, they are NOT US citizens.
I think we, the middle class, US American citizens should march — we should send a message to Washington that we want, i.e., secure borders, our laws enforced, healthcare, fair wages and lower taxes.
This is a wake up call for the middle class — take notice.
BTW: I’m not interested in being politically correct because if I were then I wouldn’t be expressing my opinions. In fact, this isn’t a Latino issue, I say any person in this country illegally should not be given amnesty — we’ve done that before — this didn’t make a difference.
