Watching movies each holiday season has become a tradition in my home. Over the years I’ve used the movies as ice breakers on several topics that might be more difficult to discuss with my son. The next ten days I’m sharing my favorites along with my ideas for conversation starters.

Number 10

The Santa Clause directed by John Pasquin (1994)

This movie features one of Tim Allen’s few successful big screen performances. So full of heart and charm it’s becoming a holiday season staple.

Conversation Starters
This movie offers an opportunity to talk about honesty, integrity, and divorce. The main character goes from being a dishonest person to Santa who is honest and has character. Discussing the way Scott Calvin changes is a good conversation starter? Asking what would you do in that situation? How would you react? Why?

Additionally, the parents in the movie are divorced so this is a good opportunity to discuss this with your children without it being about ‘them’. How does going back and forth to each parents house make the little boy feel? If your child (ages 8-11)is dealing with your divorce this is a good way to open up the lines of communication without making them feel like you’re giving them the third degree. The step-father is also included in the movie so this could be an opportunity to start a conversation about step-parents if this is in your future.
