Turned on the TV tonight and found the show Secret Millionaire. The first vignette is about a successful lawyer and his son who were dropped into a city I’m familiar with Imperial Beach CA, just south of San Diego.
They found a place to live that rents on a daily basis at $57.00/day. This would mean you are paying $1,710.00 a month - amazing!
What this story has brought home to me is that I am blessed. I come from a family where if you needed something someone would help you. My father would lend a hand to a neighbor without expecting or thinking of anything in return. People do for one another - without thinking twice - they would give you the shirt off their back if you needed it. That’s the people I come from and thought this was how everyone was but as this show illustrates if you’ve never been exposed to this way of life then you are surprised when someone gives without expecting anything in return.
My son used to ask me when he was little if we were rich - I always responded - “yes, we’re rich in love.” These issues are taking center stage right now with the economy issues - we are all one paycheck from not having a roof over our heads. It could happen to anyone - so there is no us or them anymore - it is now we! Anyone can find themselves down on their luck and it seems more and more people need a hand up.
It brings tears to my eyes, these people have experienced ‘real people’ without the pretenses - without the expectations of their money.
Again, I am blessed - if I loose all my possessions today - I am still blessed - why? - because I come from good people. I’ve got life-long friends, I have a great life, parents who love me, a son I’m proud of, good friends, and my health. Yes, I’m rich in love!
